In my husband’s defense (so you don’t think he is a total nut job) he asks because his meal selections for breakfast and lunch are determined by what we are eating at night. So if we are eating a 5-course meal, he will eat on the lighter side during the day (we are both big into watching our weights). I understand his reasoning completely but again who thinks about dinner at 8AM…certainly not me. So I would ramble off the first thing that would come to my mind; which was the same boring meals we always eat (sausage and peppers, pasta with sauce, steak and potatoes…etc.) and now had to figure out how to squeeze a supermarket trip into my day. Then when I couldn’t think of anything or just didn’t want the “usual” we would order out or dine out. But truth be told a pizza here and take out there really starts to add up (especially if you are trying to save money like we are) and then going out with a “testing toddler” and a “on the move baby” is more work than its worth! Honestly, its’ just easier to stay home these days…
This was my story for seven years until this past November when it all changed! I was looking for a new calendar that I could hang on my fridge and right next to the calendar section was an “Organizher Products” section. The shopping list memo pad caught my eye. I am always forgetting things when I go shopping or I forget to check the fridge to see what I actually need, so this would be perfect. I didn’t need the meal planning side (“because I don’t have time for that”) but I guess I could use it to jot down the events for the week. Okay then…SOLD! (pictured below)
We carried on like this for a little longer till one week we had a very busy week ahead of us and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get to the store every day or even every other day. So I sat down and planned what we were going to eat around that week’s busy schedule and you know what it was LIBERATING!
I bet you never would of thought it could be so stressful to decide what to feed your family 3 times a day 7 days a week 365 days a year! BUT IT IS!!!
I went to the supermarket one time that week and I had so much more free time. My hubby would get up every morning, look at the meal written down and knew exactly what to eat during the day. One less thing to worry about! Since I knew at 11AM what I was making for dinner I was able to start prepping the food early (during my son’s morning nap), not having to wait till we figured out the evenings menu and then getting scr*w8d if my kids didn’t nap in the afternoon!
Now by every Saturday I figure out the meal plan for the entire week. This allows us to try new recipes also because I will always “pin” recipes to my “Yummy Recipes” Pinterest Board and then never remember what ingredients I need to buy. Now I write down everything I need while I am in "planning mode". My husband gets a day or two to review and give feedback. If he doesn’t say anything by Sunday morning (when we family food shop for the week; we split the list & tackle Fairway in under 30 minutes...meet ya' at the register..go!) then its’ locked in and that’s that!
