The set arrived in an attractively packaged little briefcase. The 4 books were tucked away neatly inside while "Ace", the interactive pen was proudly displayed. Being a little book worm herself, my daughter was excited to unpack all the books and look at them. The recommended age for these books is 4 and up. However, the content is easy enough for a younger child to “get” while at the same time challenging; which is exactly why I wanted to test this series out. My daughter is 2 years and 9 months old, so she obviously needs help following the instructional text but once I read it to her she was off on her own on that page. And can I tell you, after a few times that we did the books together she started to remember the instructions on each page and would recite it to herself.
A few weeks ago we were at a park all day watching my husband compete in a softball tournament. So of course I had a big bag of treats inside to keep my daughter busy and our Hot Dots Jr. set was in there as well. She was able to take them out, do them by herself and even shared them with the other children who were in attendance that day as well and best of all.....no glare, like she would of experienced on a interactive tablet. As great as these interactive tablets are for children I personally think that no matter what you can never replace that touch and feel of holding a book in your hands. I also don’t think it is safe for children to always be staring at a computer screen or TV screen all day long (you have the rest of your adulthood for that, go out and be care free children!!). For those that know me personally know we always travel with ours in hand to keep my daughter busy when we are out dining but there is a time & place for everything I believe but since we discovered the world of Hot Dots Jr. these books are coming along for the ride more and more with us! And when the books stay home the pen comes for sure because we just downloaded the Hot Dots Jr. App! She uses the books and the app in the car, outside, inside, anywhere!!
In a world of technology. touch screens, flashing lights, and sounds, books are becoming “boring” to little ones. Hot Dots Jr. makes it fun again!
